The Difference Between A Green Economy Essay - 1422 Words
The difference between a green economy and a non-green economy lies in the economic values held by individuals. Technically speaking, the only difference between a green economy and a non-green economy is public policy. But if itââ¬â¢s that simple, why havenââ¬â¢t things changed? Through my research during my time in this class, and especially when reading Fitzgeraldââ¬â¢s work, I have learned that in order to reach a green economy we must shift our values. Fitzgerald emphasizes that we need to focus on sustainable actions and let the rest work itself out. The economic ââ¬Å"growthâ⬠or ââ¬Å"developmentâ⬠is more of an after thought, or an effect, but not necessarily something to be sought after. Economic development now refers more to the creation and consumption of goods. Job creation is a goal and something to strive towards, even if it means that it comes before sustainability. I think that Fitzgeraldââ¬â¢s description of economic development has a larger focus on sustainability, while everything else (such as job creation) gets worked out in its own. One example that Fitzgerald provides is the one of Freiburg in Germany. This university town, home to over 200,000 illustrates how a city can successfully integrate environmental and economic-development goals. Europeââ¬â¢s largest solar energy research organization, Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems, is a shining example of the commitment that Freiburg has to renewable energy.
